NBA Playoffs Round 1 Round-Up: OKC Thunder (2) defeat the Dallas Mavericks (7) 4-0

I’ve been fairly busy these past couple weeks, so sadly I haven’t been able to catch many of the Playoff games, let alone from this series, and these posts may be short.

The defending champion Mavericks have been the first victims in the NBA playoffs in what was probably the most entertaining (though quickest) series in the first round.  In a first round filled with injuries and blowouts, the Mavericks and Thunder were able to keep three out of their four games close, with a total margin of victory of 10 in those three games.

Though most (if not all) people predicted the Thunder to win the series, I doubt many (if anyone) saw a full sweep, but Dirk Nowitzki was carrying the offensive load for the Mavericks in all four games, which isn’t enough against the three headed monster of Durant-Westbrook-Harden.  Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle pretty much nailed the Thunder with this quote after the game 4 loss on Saturday:

They have a certain look in their eyeright now, not only that they belong but that this could be their time

Whether the Lakers close out the series at home at Game 5 or if the Nuggets can win 3 in a row, expect the next Thunder series to be a great one to watch.

The season of ridiculous dunks continues.  No, this isn’t a poster, but the Dallas Mavericks Forward Brandan Wright just did a mini-windmill off of an alley-oop pass.  Sure, it’s no Gerald Green, but there is definitely something in the air this season.

In the words of Dirk Nowitzki: “AHH SHUT IT DOWN! LET’S GO HOME!”

Jason Terry Alley-Oop Pass to Brandan Wright on the Fast Break vs. the Timberwolves

I love watching Dirk play basketball, especially when he turns it on.  His one-footed fadeaway jumper is one of the greatest things in the NBA, and he deserves to be on the court.  If he wasn’t getting old and was in full shape, he’d definitely be the best Power Forward in the league right now.

With that being said…

We need more moments like this when he goes to the booth and helps with the color commentating and play-by-play. I remember him doing it sometime last year as well when he was out with injury, and it was definitely as entertaining as this was.  On the court or on the sidelines, Dirk Nowtizki gives you gold.  Or… whatever those championship rings are made out of.

Also, that was an insane alley from Jason Terry.  Let’s hope Brandan Wright keeps his shoulder healthy so that he could continue getting lobs like these.  As a Warrior fan I’m too familiar with him being “Broken Wing.”

The Dallas Mavericks are a bunch of funny dudes.
Timberwolves forward Anthony Tolliver tweeted this picture before their game at Dallas today (Wednesday).  Of course, it was J.J. Barea’s “homecoming” to the Mavs since signing with the Wolves this offseason, and so they decided to give him one last tease.  From Tolliver’s tweet:

Look what the Mavericks did to JJ Bareas locker! Hahahahaha

I love it.

Mavericks Forward Sean Williams played a solid 11 minutes in a blowout loss to the Denver Nuggets.  He scored 12 points (4-4 from the field, 4-4 from the free throw line), pulled down 3 boards, and managed a steal and a block.  Not bad at all in limited minutes.

Williams played really hard.  Maybe a little too hard.  Once he got to the Mavericks bench, he basically…. let it all go.  Just watch the video.

His teammates are laughing because of what he did.  I’m laughing because of his hair.

NBA Christmas Day Season Opener Preview!

Firstly, Merry Christmas!  Thankfully this year, we all got one of the greatest gifts of all: a 2011-2012 NBA season!  A Christmas Day season opener seems almost too perfect, so let’s get right into it:

Game 1: Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks (Noon EST, 9am PST - TNT)

I’m hoping that Paul Pierce plays in this game, or else the Knicks are going to win easily.  This game should be great to watch nonetheless.  We get to see if Tyson Chandler will be able to make up for Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire’s defensive deficiencies.  We also get the chance to see if Boston’s bench will has enough talent to lift the team when the Big Four need rest.  All in all, I expect the Knicks to pull out with the win whether or not Pierce plays.  The Celtics will be tough, but it’s difficult for an away team to win at Madison Square Garden.

Knicks win by 3 in a close and surprisingly defensive affair if Pierce plays, by 9 if Pierce is out.

Game 2: Miami Heat vs. Dallas Mavericks (2:30pm EST, 11:30am PST - ABC)

If you don’t watch this game, then you are a fool.  It’s the first game of the season and we are already getting the rematch from last year’s Finals.  The best part about this game?  Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and company will have to sit there and watch as the Mavericks raise their Finals banner to the rafters.  Both teams are going to fight hard.  The Mavs will be playing off their momentum from last year, while the Heat should be scorching from last year.  The Heat’s talent and emotions will push them over the top in these 48 minutes.

Heat win by 3, just like some of the best games from last year’s Finals matchup.

Game 3: Chicago Bulls vs. Los Angeles Lakers (5pm EST, 2pm PST - ABC)

Two contenders that fell short last season.  The difference this season?  The Bulls have gotten better and the Lakers have gotten worse.  Don’t count this game out, though, it will be fun to watch.  Kobe Bryant will play in spite of his wrist, knowing him.  LA’s problem, though, is that Andrew Bynum will be out due to his 4 game suspension (thanks to a quick elbow to little JJ Barea).  That gives the chance for Josh McRoberts to start at PF which he’s done for Indiana, but that also thins out LA’s bench by a lot.  This game is still worth watching because of Derrick Rose, and it should be fun seeing how Rip Hamilton fits with this team.

Bulls win by 11.

Game 4: Orlando Magic vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (8pm EST, 5pm PST - ESPN)

Looks like Dwight Howard is still with the Magic, which is good or else this game would have not been as worth it as it is now.  The Thunder will be a wonder to watch for team chemistry alone.  I can’t wait to see how these guys play when Durant, Westbrook, and Harden are clicking.  You can’t forget that both teams each feature a player that averaged over 2 blocks last season, so you will get your fair share of highlights.  Also: Glen Big Baby Davis.

Thunder win by 7

Game 5: Los Angeles Clippers vs. Golden State Warriors (10:30pm EST, 7:30pm PST - ESPN)

Do NOT sleep on this game.  There are too many reasons why you don’t want to watch this game.  1) Chris Paul’s official debut with the Clippers.  2) Great offensive backcourt with Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis.  3) Blake Griffin.  4) DeAndre Jordan.  5) Mark Jackson.  6) Kwame Brown.  The problem with this matchup, though, is that Stephen Curry may not play due to his sprained ankle (yes, again).  This matchup should be a must watch whether he plays or not, though.  No one will be able to cover Monta Ellis and he may very well go for an easy 40 points.  Blake and DeAndre will get all the lobs they want with Lee and Biedrin’s defense, in spite of Mark Jackson’s new dedication to the defensive end.  So yes, I don’t care if you’re going to be up at 1 in the morning, because this game could very well have a combined score of over 220 points.

Clippers win by 6 if Curry plays, by 15 if Curry’s out.  And just kidding about the whole Kwame Brown thing.

Merry Christmas and I hope that everyone enjoys the first day of the NBA season!

2010-2011 Bold Statements: Western Conference Standings

I doubt anyone will agree with these standings.

The Western Conference is much more of a mystery than the East.  Every major team has made major roster changes, so I may be completely off with these standings.  And just like last year, there will be a lot of teams fighting for the final 8th seed in the playoffs.
Playoff Picture
  • Thunder (1) vs. Nuggets (8)
  • Mavericks (2) vs. Spurs (7)
  • Lakers (3) vs. Blazers (6)
  • Grizzlies (4) vs. Clippers (5)

The Oklahoma City Thunder will be amazing this year.  All of their main players will be back: Durant, Westbrook, Harden, Ibaka, Perkins, Sefolosha, Maynor, Collison, and Cook.  A full year and training camp with Perkins will also be really beneficial to their success.  There won’t be a problem with Westbrook taking too many shots this season and Durant will be a top consideration for MVP.  This team has it.

I almost didn’t put the Dallas Mavericks this high because they are getting older and Jason Kidd will not be playing all 66 games this season. They also lost great pieces in JJ Barea, DeShawn Stevenson, and defensive cornerstone Tyson Chandler.  The main reason why I have them this high is because they replaced those players with a lot of talent.  Delonte West, Vince Carter, and Lamar Odom are all great talents that will contribute a lot to this team.  Beaubois should also be back for a full season.  I have high hopes for this team.

The Los Angeles Lakers at the 3nd seed is a stretch to me.  They lost a lot of chemistry with the losses of Lamar Odom and Phil Jackson.  How Mike Brown’s system will work with this team is a total coin-flip.  With that said, this team still has too much talent that you cannot ignore.  Kobe is still Kobe and will score a lot of points.  Bynum will be really good this season (once he’s back from his suspension).  Josh McRoberts isn’t Lamar, but he will be a great player off the bench.  Devin Ebanks looks like he will break out this season.  The Lakers will still be really good.

This is probably my most ridiculous prediction.  Yes, I think the Memphis Grizzlies will be good enough to take the #4 spot in the Western Conference.  Their young core of Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, Tony Allen, Mike Conley, and OJ Mayo is still in tact.  I actually had this team up at #2 (huge stretch, but I believe), but once Darrell Arthur went down with an Achilles injury, my hopes dropped a bit.

I’m surprised I don’t have this Los Angeles Clippers team higher.  I’ve given in to “Lob City” but you also have to remember that it’s only their first year together; they haven’t even had a full training camp together.  Their starting line-up is deadly, though, with CP3, Billups, Butler, Blake, and DeAndre, with a solid bench of Mo Williams, Foye, Gomes, and Reggie Evans.  If I’m so high on them, then why are they only the 5th seed?  Vinny Del Negro.

Like the Pacers, I’m probably a lot higher on this Portland Trailblazers team than many others.  Brandon Roy and Greg Oden being out will be a big blow, but you also have to take into account how neither of them were around a lot last season, and they still got the 6th seed.  They still need another big man to make up for Camby’s absence in the beginning of the season, but LaMarcus Aldridge’s due for a huge All-Star season.  Plus, with the addition of Jamal Crawford, they have a nice back court with Wesley Matthews and Raymond Felton.

The San Antonio Spurs are in the same situation as the Boston Celtics: win enough games to make the playoffs.  Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili definitely won’t be playing 66 games each.  Antonio McDyess just retired and George Hill is now a Pacer.  That means players like Tiago Splitter, Matt Bonner, Gary Neal and Kawhi Leonard are going to have to step up more, but only to a low playoff seed.  The Spurs’ championship window is closing and sadly, this doesn’t look like their year.

There is no team more confusing than the Denver Nuggets this year.  They lost JR Smith, Wilson Chandler, and Kenyon Martin to the Chinese Basketball Association until March; two out of those three more than likely would have returned to Denver.  Nonetheless, they still have enough on their team to make the playoffs.  Both Nene and Arron Afflalo will be back and will have more touches.  Gallinari is due to step up his game, and Andre Miller and Ty Lawson will be a great point guard tandem.  Rudy Fernandez is also a really good pick-up from the Mavericks, and Kenneth Faried will be a really good rookie.  Now it’s just about George Karl putting this all together cohesively.

The Unfortunate Ones

  • Houston Rockets
  • Phoenix Suns
  • Golden State Warriors
  • Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Utah Jazz
  • New Orleans Hornets
  • Sacramento Kings

I feel bad for the Houston Rockets.  They are always stuck fighting for that 8th seed in the playoffs, but eventually falling just short.  Kevin McHale will be a good coach for this team (even Jordan Hill looked good during the preseason), but with a roster like this, one can only do so much.

10th seed seems a little high for the Phoenix Suns, but Steve Nash and Grant Hill have had a taste from the fountain of youth.  Nash is the kind of point guard that makes everyone around him better, and they’ll keep fighting to make that last playoff spot.

The Golden State Warriors’ success all depends on how the team responds to Mark Jackson’s devotion to team defense.  Also: Stephen Curry’s ankle.  With this roster, though, realistically I only see them around the 9th-12th seed.  That means that they don’t make the playoffs and they lose their top-7 protected 2012 draft pick that the Utah Jazz have.  Luck of the Warriors.

I am buying into the Minnesota Timberwolves this year.  They are no longer the worst team in the Western Conference with Kevin Love getting even better and the additions of Ricky Rubio, Derrick Williams, and JJ Barea.  Granted, they still won’t be good enough, mostly because Rubio and Williams have still yet to prove their worth.

I’m not nearly as high on the Utah Jazz as anyone else.  They lost too much talent with Deron Williams and Jerry Sloan.  Though they have a great front line with Favors, Jefferson, Millsap, and Kanter, I just don’t see enough talent to push them back to relevance.  They can easily go up to 10th, though, but I doubt it.

What can I say about the New Orleans Hornets… I think Aminu’s, Gordon’s, and Kaman’s faces say it all.  At least Gordon can let loose and have an All-Star worthy year!

And that leaves the Sacramento Kings.  At first I didn’t want to put this team so low, but I couldn’t put myself to write them any higher.  They have a lot of solid players in Tyreke, Jimmer, Thornton, Salmons, Garcia, Honeycutt, Hickson, Cousins, Thompson, and Hayes… but honestly, how is Paul Westphal going to implement these players cohesively?

Chandler signing with the Warriors is almost too perfect, which is why it will never happen because we’re talking about the Warriors here.  It makes sense though.  The Warriors need a defensive center to compensate for David Lee’s lack of defensive ability.  Plus, he doesn’t need to be astounding on the offensive end when they have players like Stephen Curry, Monta Ellis, David Lee, Dorell Wright, and Reggie Williams who can score at will.  He’s also a California guy.  See, too much sense, which is why the Warriors will never do it.
Houston’s also a really good fit for Chandler, seeing as they need more size at Center with Yao Ming retiring.  If they retain Chuck Hayes, that is an incredibly great defensive frontcourt already.  They also have more cap-space than the Warriors.
Edit: How can I forget the New Jersey Nets?  Apparently they, along with the Warriors, are the top suitors for Chandler this season.  I actually think this is a weird fit because who’s going to play Power Forward, Chandler or Lopez?  It could work; there’s Pau and Bynum in LA, and Dirk and Chandler worked nicely (though Dirk’s a very unique power forward), but you also have to take into account that Brook just might not be there yet.  This would definitely increase the Nets’ chances of resigning Deron Williams next offseason, but I just don’t see the Nets getting very far with that line-up.  At most, they’ll be 8-10th seed in the East, which doesn’t mean much.  They should be spending more time finding better swing-men and a legit PF.
And there’s my off-season preview on Tyson Chandler, that just happened on accident.

I haven’t seen a Dirk commercial, I haven’t seen a Jason Kidd commercial, Jason Terry commercial. But I’ve seen a LeBron McDonald’s commercial. Dwyane Wade’s on a T-Mobile commercial. I just feel like we don’t get the respect as a team that worked hard to win a championship.

DeShawn’s still mad y’all.

Day 23 of Lost NBA Games

10 games we could have kept track of while you wait for it to be Thanksgiving.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Charlotte Bobcats - I’m gonna be frank here, but the Bobcats would get killed inside.  Non-sequitur, but I first typed Charlotte Hornets, but then caught myself.  I miss those days.

Indiana Pacers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers - I can’t help but SMH when I look at the Cavs’ roster.  They don’t have much outside of Kyrie Irving, Boom Dizzle (barely), Omri Casspi, Antawn Jamison, and Anderson Varejao.  And even then, that’s a bit sketchy (besides Kyrie).  The Pacers, on the other hand, have Darren Collison, George Hill, Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert, Paul George, and Psycho T.  Very promising.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder - Why wouldn’t you want to watch a game between these two teams.  Classic Kobe vs. Durant.  I would write more, but it’s pretty self-explanatory.

Toronto Raptors vs. Boston Celtics - You would have had the worst defense (30th in Defensive Efficiency with 110… wow) against a team with one of the best defenses (2nd with a Defensive Efficiency of 97.8).  Um, yeah, that basically explains it all.

Portland Trailblazers vs. Detroit Pistons - Every now and then you see a matchup that doesn’t really matter too much.  They meet only twice a year, and honestly none of the matchups look very promising.  Raymond Felton vs. Rodney Stuckey maybe?  Otherwise, I actually don’t know how to approach this game.  Sorry folks.

New Jersey Nets vs. Milwaukee Bucks - I would love to see Deron Williams light up for 50 over Brandon Jennings.  I’m still sore from the time Jennings scored 55 on the Warriors back in his rookie season.  Brooke Lopez vs. Andrew Bogut also looks like a very intriguing matchup.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Houston Rockets - The best and the worst out of the Southwest Division.  Granted, the Rockets are still a very solid over-.500 team, so that statement doesn’t even mean much.  This should’ve been a really fun game with Kevin Martin and Dirk Nowitzki shooting the lights out.

Golden State Warriors vs. Minnesota Timberwolves - I guess we’ll have to wait until next year to see Dorell Wright drop 9 three-pointers at the Target Center.  Can’t believe that was already almost a whole year ago (Nov. 27, 2010).

Orlando Magic vs. San Antonio Spurs - You can’t not love the idea of this game.  Two great defensive big men duke it out in San Antonio, and it would have been great.  Dwight Howard.  Tim Duncan.  Damn.

Utah Jazz vs. Sacramento Kings - Wow, I actually think the Kings own this matchup.  Granted, the Jazz’s front line is deeper and looks stronger, but the Kings’ backcourt should’ve made up for it.
